2021 guide for non-EU B2C sellers and marketplaces: Ecommerce EU VAT reboot

Your guide to understanding IOSS, and how EU VAT changes may impact your business

On July 1, 2021, member states of the European Union (EU) are set to launch sweeping reforms to the VAT obligations of B2C ecommerce sellers and marketplace facilitators. If you have customers in the EU, you may need to adjust your existing compliance processes and ensure you have the right VAT registrations in place. Businesses that don't comply risk fines, penalties, and delayed shipments to customers.

Our guide provides valuable information about these changes and what they could mean for your business. Three of the major reforms covered here include:

  • Closing of the import VAT exemption loophole and introduction of the simplified Import One-Stop Shop (IOSS) process
  • The switch to a single EU VAT return for ecommerce — One-Stop Shop (OSS)
  • Shifting responsibilities for marketplaces as they become "deemed suppliers," responsible for collecting, reporting, and remitting VAT on behalf of marketplace sellers

These reforms will likely require U.S. and Canadian businesses to change their VAT and customs compliance processes. There's a lot to learn, and we're here to help.
